How to Drill a Pilot Hole

1. Choose a drill bit slightly smaller than the screw root diameter — about 75% of shank diameter in softwood, 90% in hardwood.
2. Mark the hole location with a punch to keep the bit from walking.
3. Drill straight and to full depth, using a bit stop or tape flag for consistent depth.
4. Clear the chips by pulling the bit back once or twice.
5. Countersink if the screw head must sit flush.
6. Drive the screw with steady pressure; stop before the head over-tightens.
