How to Remove a Rusted or Seized Bolt

1. Soak the threads in penetrating oil — or a 50/50 acetone and ATF mix — and let it sit 10 to 15 minutes, longer for heavy rust.
2. Wire-brush the exposed threads and around the head so the wrench seats cleanly.
3. Use a 6-point socket or box-end wrench, not a 12-point, so you do not round the head.
4. Try tightening a hair first to crack the corrosion bond, then loosen slowly and in small steps.
5. If it will not move, heat the nut with a torch and re-apply penetrating oil; the expansion and contraction breaks the rust.
6. If the head rounds or snaps, cut a slot with a rotary tool, or drill and use a bolt extractor.
