How to Remove a Stripped Screw

1. Try a fresh, correctly sized bit and maximum downward pressure first — many stripped screws are just worn bits.
2. Place a wide rubber band over the recess and press the bit through it for extra grip.
3. If the head is raised, grip it with locking pliers and turn it out slowly.
4. Tap a slightly larger bit (or a Torx bit) into the recess with a hammer to re-seat the drive.
5. For stubborn recessed heads, use a screw extractor: drill a small pilot, drive the extractor in reverse, and back the screw out.
6. As a last resort, cut a new slot with a rotary tool and use a flathead — or drill the head off and remove the shank with pliers.
