Confirm the connection is code-compliant: for deck ledgers, use 1/2 in diameter lag bolts (or structural screws) as a common starting point, and follow local code spacing tables.
Length must pass through the ledger and sheathing and penetrate the rim joist or stud by at least the code-specified depth — usually the full thickness of the rim board plus 1/2 in minimum.
Pre-drill the ledger with a clearance hole sized to the shank, and the rim board with a pilot hole sized to the thread root.
Space bolts per code (commonly two staggered rows), and keep minimum edge distances.
Use hot-dip galvanized or stainless fasteners with pressure-treated lumber to prevent corrosion.
Tighten firmly but do not strip — a snug, seated head with a flat washer under it.
